The Trafalgar ProPatria Legion is proud to announce that Muggins, The Historic Victoria Pooch has found a new home at 411 Gorge Road East.
The purebred Spitz raised over $400,000.00 (in today’s dollars) to support the Red Cross overseas during WWI. Muggins spent a lot of time at the Empress Hotel welcoming visitors to the City. He was taught to wander all by himself through downtown streets during the First World War with two donation boxes tied to his back, collecting funds for charities including the Canadian Red Cross, food for children in need and prisoners of war. This is what was printed on his pack…"I'm not chained to my job; I'm just doing my bit. Have you done yours?".
His contributions were recognized with eight different awards including the American and French Red Cross. Muggins became a famed mascot meeting the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) and famous Canadian General Arthur Currie.
Muggins also has a silent film showing him at the Empress receiving donations.
The intriguing story of this very special dog has been captured by Grant Hayter-Menzies in his book “Muggins: The Life and Afterlife of a Canadian Canine War Hero.” The Legion looks forward to sharing the story of this clever little dog who served his country and his community.
